Snow shovelling Tips - As seen on CP24
Winter means snow - and a spike in totally preventable injuries.
Our Physiotherapist, Daniel Zavalkovsky, recently joined CP24 News Breakfast with Jennifer Hsiung and Nick Dixon to talk about something most of us do every winter without thinking twice: shoveling snow.
Daniel shared evidence-based strategies to help you:
- Protect your back, shoulders and knees while shoveling
- Reduce strain with proper posture and lifting technique
- Warm up your muscles before you head outside
- Pace yourself and take breaks to avoid overexertion
- Use smart tools and lighter loads instead of heavy, twisting lifts
Shoveling might feel like “just another chore,” but it’s actually a demanding full-body workout—especially for older adults, people with previous injuries, or anyone with heart or joint issues. With the right approach, you can clear your driveway without ending up in pain for days after.
We’re proud to have Daniel representing our team and helping Canadians stay safer, stronger, and more mobile all winter long.
If you’d like to learn more about preventing winter injuries or need support recovering from one, our physiotherapy team is here to help.
