Your Orthotics Questions Answered

WILL MY ORTHOTICS CORRECT MY FOOT PROBLEMS?

Orthotics will not permanently change the structure of your foot but they will correct how your feet and, by extension, your ankles, knees, and hips function, thereby providing significant relief. In some cases, orthotics can prevent or delay the progression of certain painful conditions, thereby decreasing pain. Some examples are plantar fasciitis, flat feet (overpronation), bunions, corns and calluses. Orthotics can also help alleviate knee, hip and back pain. Learn more about the foot conditions your Chiropodist can help you with HERE.

ARE ORTHOTICS ALWAYS BIG AND BULKY?

Absolutely not! Orthotics can be made fit just about any type of shoe, or sport-specific footwear. From flats and heels to basketball, tennis and squash shoes to skates, soccer cleats and ski boots ... we've done it all. Learn more about the types of orthotics available HERE.

SHOULD I BE WEARING MY ORTHOTICS ALL THE TIME?

Orthotics are like glasses, they only help when you're wearing them.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET USED TO NEW ORTHOTICS?

Everyone's different and it depends on several factors like:
- if you have worn orthotics before
- your age, height and weight
- the activities you're using your orthotics for
- and more!
It is perfectly normal to experience some discomfort with new orthotics since they slightly change the alignment of your body. In fact, this discomfort is a sign that your orthotics are actually working

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CUSTOM ORTHOTICS AND STORE-BOUGHT ORTHOTICS?

Custom orthotics are made specifically for YOUR individual needs, to address your unique biomechanical inefficiencies, foot pain, injuries, etc. They are constructed after a detailed clinical assessment is performed by a Chiropodist or Podiatrist.

OTC (over the counter) arch supports or insoles are mass produced, providing limited relief and can be used as a temporary solution. Since they’re not specifically made for you, store bought orthotics cannot effectively treat long-standing foot issues or correct biomechanical foot problems. Learn more in our blog post about the difference between custom orthotics and store-bought insoles.

WILL MY NEW ORTHOTICS FIT ANY SHOE?

Most custom orthotics will fit in multiple shoes. You do not need to buy new shoes for your orthotics.

During your initial assessment, you can discuss different options based on your foot condition, lifestyle, and current footwear.
We are able to provide you with a variety of orthotics, that will differ in size, material and shape. Each orthotic is completely customized so as to best suit your foot condition, lifestyle, activities and current footwear.

HOW LONG DO CUSTOM ORTHOTICS LAST FOR?

Orthotics last for different lengths of time based on the following criteria:

- How often you wear them
- Your weight
- Type of activities (E.g. High impact vs low impact)
- Care of orthotics

We recommend that you book a consultation with your Chiropodist or Podiatrist once a year, to assess your orthotics and to discuss any changes in your foot condition or lifestyle.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING MY ORTHOTICS APPOINTMENT?

Custom orthotics are only one part of your overall foot health treatment plan. Your appointment starts with an in-depth discussion with your Chiropodist about your medical history and continues through to discussing your various physical activities and commonly worn footwear. Your Chiropodist will also educate you on choosing the best footwear for your foot health, lifestyle, and activities. Lastly, you will be shown an appropriate stretching regimen and related exercises to help strengthen the muscles in your kinetic chain (feet, ankles, knees, hips and back).

DO I NEED TO WEAR SPECIAL SHOES WITH MY ORTHOTICS?

Absolutely not! We can make orthotics that fit almost all of your shoes. Please bring your most commonly worn shoes to your appointment and the Chiropodist will make sure they order orthotics that will fit in those shoes.

Don't see your question here? Don't worry, we can still help you!  Emailcall or text us to learn more or set up a FREE virtual consultation with one of our Chiropodists to find out if orthotics are right for you.

Properly Aligned

Kinetic Chain

The feet represent the base of the kinetic chain, and each subsequent joint above the feet can be considered a ‘link’ in the chain, much like a stable house is built upon a strong foundation

01/

Plantar Fasciitis

Custom orthotics are designed to reduce the pressure and loading of the plantar fascia, so you can keep moving pain free.

02/

Foot Fatigue

The stabilizing heel cup and custom arch support improves comfort and and reduces forces on the muscles and ligaments of the foot, decreasing foot fatigue.

03/

Flat feet

The supportive arch is custom designed according to the size and shape of your foot, offering a healthier alignment and reducing uneven loading and pressure.

04/

High arches

Orthotics offer custom support for high arches, allowing you to distribute weight and pressure evenly across the entire surface of the foot.

05/

Improving the Kinetic Chain

Orthotics help to relieve pain in the foot, heel, ankle and lower leg by placing these joints back into their natural alignment so that they ‘track’ properly, move more efficiently, and with significantly less discomfort.

06/

Knee, hip and back pain

By properly aligning the foot and ankle, there is often also a reduction in knee, hip and back pain, since the foundation of the ‘kinetic chain’ (i.e. the feet!) is being properly aligned.
