Your Orthotics Questions Answered
WILL MY ORTHOTICS CORRECT MY FOOT PROBLEMS?
Orthotics will not permanently change the structure of your foot but they will correct how your feet and, by extension, your ankles, knees, and hips function, thereby providing significant relief. In some cases, orthotics can prevent or delay the progression of certain painful conditions, thereby decreasing pain. Some examples are plantar fasciitis, flat feet (overpronation), bunions, corns and calluses. Orthotics can also help alleviate knee, hip and back pain.
ARE ORTHOTICS ALWAYS BIG AND BULKY?
Absolutely not! Orthotics can be made fit just about any type of shoe, or sport-specific footwear. From flats and heels to basketball, tennis and squash shoes to skates, soccer cleats and ski boots ... we've done it all.
SHOULD I BE WEARING MY ORTHOTICS ALL THE TIME?
Orthotics are like glasses, they only help when you're wearing them.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET USED TO NEW ORTHOTICS?
Everyone's different and it depends on several factors like:
- if you have worn orthotics before
- your age, height and weight
- the activities you're using your orthotics for
- and more!
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CUSTOM ORTHOTICS AND STORE-BOUGHT ORTHOTICS?
Custom orthotics are made specifically for YOUR individual needs, to address your unique biomechanical inefficiencies, foot pain, injuries, etc. They are constructed after a detailed clinical assessment is performed by a Chiropodist or Podiatrist.
OTC (over the counter) arch supports or insoles are mass produced, providing limited relief and can be used as a temporary solution. Since they’re not specifically made for you, store bought orthotics cannot effectively treat long-standing foot issues or correct biomechanical foot problems. Learn more in our blog post about the difference between custom orthotics and store-bought insoles.
WILL MY NEW ORTHOTICS FIT ANY SHOE?
Most custom orthotics will fit in multiple shoes. You do not need to buy new shoes for your orthotics.
During your initial assessment, you can discuss different options based on your foot condition, lifestyle, and current footwear.
HOW LONG DO CUSTOM ORTHOTICS LAST FOR?
Orthotics last for different lengths of time based on the following criteria:
- How often you wear them
- Your weight
- Type of activities (E.g. High impact vs low impact)
- Care of orthotics
We recommend that you book a consultation with your Chiropodist or Podiatrist once a year, to assess your orthotics and to discuss any changes in your foot condition or lifestyle.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING MY ORTHOTICS APPOINTMENT?
DO I NEED TO WEAR SPECIAL SHOES WITH MY ORTHOTICS?
Absolutely not! We can make orthotics that fit almost all of your shoes. Please bring your most commonly worn shoes to your appointment and the Chiropodist will make sure they order orthotics that will fit in those shoes.

The feet represent the base of the kinetic chain, and each subsequent joint above the feet can be considered a ‘link’ in the chain, much like a stable house is built upon a strong foundation
