EAPs: What are they and why we’re completely different

We work with a lot of companies, helping them provide a variety of different health and wellness services for their teams. It’s not surprising that, when it comes to workplace wellness programs, every company, and employee, has slightly different goals. In speaking with people in a variety of industries, there is occasionally some confusion about what we do, whether we’re an EAP provider, and how we differ from an EAP.

What is an EAP?

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a program offering counselling services to help employees with personal issues or situations that are affecting their performance at work. Typically EAPs are part of an overall workplace wellness program to promote the health and wellbeing of the employees of a given organization and involves things like policies, procedures, training for all levels of employees, etc.

What is the purpose of an EAP?

EAPs help employees address various issues in their personal and professional lives that may be affecting their work. These issues don’t necessarily have to be caused in the workplace. EAPs are designed with the goal of helping people acknowledge and/or solve their problems regardless of their source. Some EAPs offer a wide range of primarily counselling-related services, they often “refer to other professionals or agencies who can offer more or extended care in particular areas.” EAPs are paid for by the employer as part of the employee’s compensation and benefits package, however coverage and service details vary for each employer.

How does HealthCasa's corporate health and wellness services differ from an EAP?

There is occasionally some overlap when it comes to wellness programs. However, not all EAP providers include a wellness program aspect. It’s also important to note that HealthCasa does not charge any registration, monthly or annual fees for corporate health and wellness services. The employer does not have to spend anything to offer HealthCasa’s services to their employees. Most services are covered by the employee’s insurance benefits. HealthCasa allows employers to provide employees with access to HealthCasa’s healthcare services, thereby preventing them from getting sick (i.e. naturopathy, dietician and nutritionist services) and prevent stress (registered massage therapy) and injuries (physiotherapy, chiropody, orthotics, ergonomic assessments) with the insurance benefits they have already paid for.

If the employer does choose a "paid-for" service such a wellness seminar, yoga or meditation session, it is important to note that services are paid for on an individual basis. This means that the employer is not forced to commit to a monthly or yearly subscription.

What’s even more unique about what HealthCasa does is that we offer a hybrid model of care for employees (and their families) whether they’re working at the office, working from home, on leave, and so on. Our hybrid model is a combination of virtual care, in-person appointments (at the patient’s home or at work) and group wellness sessions (either virtually or in-person) to educate employees on better preventative health and wellness choices.

Our focus on allied healthcare (i.e. physiotherapy, registered massage therapy, chiropody, naturopathy, nutrition and dietetics) allows us to provide a preventative approach to the health and wellbeing of employees. This flexible and forward-thinking approach not only IMPROVES health, but helps KEEPS employees and their families healthier.. This ultimately leads to a healthier, happier and more productive team with drastically reduced absenteeism rates.

HealthCasa’s comprehensive employee wellness programs are an important investment in employee health and productivity which directly improves an organization’s performance and bottom line.
